McDonald’s fries got an unexpected splash in Australia! Not with a new recipe, but with water from a mop. Sounds bizarre? Well, an Australian McDonald’s worker was caught drying a wet mop under the fry station’s heat lamp, much to the horror of customers both in the store and online.

Debbie Barakat, who was at the Booval McDonald’s in Brisbane with her son on April 4, witnessed the odd scene. She saw an employee casually holding a damp mop just inches from the hot lights and the fries.

“I was waiting for my order when I heard another staff member say, ‘I don’t think you should be doing that; it could be a safety issue as it might catch on fire,'" Barakat told Yahoo! News Australia. The worker reportedly just laughed off the warning.

Other employees continued working around the mop-drying scene for about a minute, grabbing fries to complete orders. “I was totally shocked at what I witnessed, and she just laughed it off," Barakat repeated.

    Take a Look:

The mop had just been used to clean the floor before the employee started drying it in front of customers. Appalled, Barakat emailed the store’s manager about the stomach-churning act but received a rather vague response.

“Be assured that we’re taking corrective action so a similar action will not reoccur," the manager replied.

Despite the incident happening on April 4, Barakat waited over six weeks to share the video after noticing more complaints about the restaurant. She voiced her concerns, saying, “Something needs to be done. If they’re comfortable doing this in front of customers, what exactly happens behind the scenes?"

A McDonald’s Australia spokesperson called it an isolated incident, emphasising, “McDonald’s takes food safety extremely seriously and follows strict cleaning, sanitization, and hygiene procedures in all restaurants."
