With the Union Budget 2025-2026 set to be presented on February 1, 2025, let’s take a look at the finance ministers who have the presented the most number of budgets to date.
Morarji Desai (1959-1963, 1967-1969): Former PM Morarji Desai holds the record for presenting the most number of budgets. He presented a total of 10 budgets during his tenure as finance minister under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and later Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
P. Chidambaram (1996-1998, 2004-2008, 2013-2014): With nine budgets presented, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram is second. He first presented the budget on March 19, 1996 during the United Front government led by Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.
Pranab Mukherjee (1982-1984, 2009-2012): Pranab Mukherjee has the record of presenting a total of 8 budgets.
Yashwant Sinha (1998-2002): Yashwant Sinha has presented the budget 7 times.
C.D. Deshmukh (1951-1956): As the first Indian RBI governor, he presented 7 budgets. He shaped the post-independence economic policies for national development.
Nirmala Sitharaman (2019-2024): Sitharaman created a record of presenting 7 consecutive budgets with last year’s budget. With this year she will present the budget for the 8th consecutive time.
