Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday (March 11) for a two-day visit,  at the invitation of his Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who welcomed him warmly at the airport. He is the Chief Guest at Mauritius’s National Day Celebrations.

Before leaving for the island nation, PM Modi said that both the countries are connected by deep rooted cultural ties and this visit would open a new and bright chapter between both the nations. As the Prime Minister commences his two-day visit, here’s a look back at his 1998 Mauritius tour.

PM Modi visited Mauritius in 1998 as BJP’s National General Secretary to speak at the International Ramayana Conference.

During his 1998 visit, PM Modi met key Mauritian leaders, including then-President Cassam Uteem, PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Leader of Opposition Anerood Jugnauth and Paul Raymond Berenger, who later became PM of Mauritius.

Narendra Modi also visited the sacred lake, Ganga Talao,  where generations of indentured labourers and their descendants continued Hindu traditions far from their ancestral land.

He also visited the Chamarel Waterfall, the highest waterfall in the island nation.

He also explored the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel, a unique geological formation known for its vibrant sand dunes.

PM Modi also visited Île aux Cerfs, where he observed Mauritius’s efforts to maintain a delicate balance between environmental conservation and human habitation.
