A video going viral on social media shows a man with burning clothes standing close to the small red car, with flames coming from its windows.

A 50-year-old Dutchman was arrested on suspicion of arson after his car caught fire following an explosion in central Amsterdam on Thursday. Officials believe it could have been an attempted suicide.

A video of the incident has also emerged on social media. It shows a small red car approaching the National Monument near the southeastern corner of the square. Moments later, a small explosion takes place, with flames erupting from the vehicle.

    People nearby are seen running away, while several police cars quickly arrive and surround the burning vehicle.

    Amsterdam police later confirmed on X (formerly Twitter), “Camera images show that the fire on the Dam was sparked after an explosion in a car."

    “At that moment, there were a lot of people close to the vehicle, but as far as we know, no bystanders were injured," police added.

    The square was later sealed off by officials while explosives experts examined the car, which was eventually removed.

      “Police detectives are keeping all scenarios open but have strong suspicions that the man wanted to take his own life," police said on the social media platform X.

      Earlier this week, a man injured five people in a stabbing attack near Dam Square. The accused was identified as a 30-year-old from the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
