Donald Trump scripted history as he became the first Republican in two decades to win the popular vote in a US Presidential Poll. The former and the next US President became the first Republican leader to achieve this feat since George W. Bush in 2004.
Bush had secured 62,040,610 votes and 286 electoral votes in the 2004 elections fighting against Democratic candidate John Kerry who got 59,028,444 votes and 251 electoral votes.

Former US President Barack Obama received the most significant popular vote victory in the last 20 years when he got 69.5 million votes (52.9%) and 365 electoral votes in 2008. His re-election campaign, though successful, witnessed a slight decline to 51.1% of the popular vote, winning 332 electoral votes.
Trump’s first successful campaign in 2016
Donald Trump, who led the Republican campaign successfully in 2016, won the Presidential election with 304 electoral votes even though he received only 46.1% of the popular vote. Hillary Clinton, his rival and Democratic Party’s candidate, got 48.2% of the popular votes – 2.1% more than Trump, yet she fell short in the electoral college count, underlining the unique electoral system the US has.
In 2020, Joe Biden won both popular votes and the majority in the Electoral College, winning 51.3% of the popular votes and 306 Electoral College votes. His opponent and then US President Trump won 74,223,975 votes while his electoral votes were 232.
Trump’s impressive show in US Presidential Election 2024
He won not only the crucial swing states of North Carolina and Georgia but also the challenging battleground of Pennsylvania which harbours 19 electoral college votes.
His victory in Pennsylvania and other swing states put him much ahead in the race to the White House.
As the counting of votes progressed further late in the evening (local time), Kamala Harris failed to find momentum despite putting up a good show in Democratic strongholds.
