Elon Musk Backs UK MP's 'English Only' Call Over Bengali Signage At London Station
Elon Musk backed British MP Rupert Lowe's call for London station names to be in "English only," slamming Whitechapel Station's Bengali signage. The signage was installed in 2022.
Nearly three years after a Bengali language signage at London’s Whitechapel Station caught the people’s attention, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed his agreement to a British MP’s complaint that station names in the city “should be in English, and English only".
Musk, on X, wrote “Yes" to Great Yarmouth MP Rupert Lowe’s post on Sunday.

“This is London – the station name should be in English, and English only," the MP’s post read.
He also shared a picture of the station, with the signage both in English and Bengali.

Nearly three years ago, in March 2022, the Bengali signage was installed at the station to pay tribute to the contribution the Bangladeshi community has made to east London.
For the purpose, Tower Hamlets council had funded dual language signs throughout Whitechapel Station as part of wider improvements. Thereafter, the station was visited by the mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs, and Bangladesh High Commissioner Saida Muna Tasneem.
It should be noted that the area is home to the biggest Bangladeshi community in the UK.
Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hailed the Bengali language signage at London’s Whitechapel Station, by saying, “Proud to note that the London Tube Rail has accepted Bengali as a language of signage at Whitechapel Station, signifying the increasing global importance & strength of the 1000-year old language Bengali."
“It underlines that the diaspora should work together in common cultural directions. It is a victory of our culture and heritage," she added.
