Trump Says He Believes India Will Be Lowering Tariffs On US Substantially
President Trump believes India will lower tariffs on US goods. He announced retaliatory tariffs starting April 2 against countries with high duties on US products

US President Donald Trump has said that he believes India will probably be lowering the tariffs it imposes on American goods.
“I believe they’re going to probably going to be lowering those tariffs substantially, but on April 2, we will be charging them the same tariffs they charge us," he was quoted as saying by Breitbart News.

Earlier, Trump announced that retaliatory tariffs would be implemented starting April 2 against countries that impose high duties on American goods. This announcement came just days after Trump claimed that India had agreed to reduce tariffs, stating, “Somebody is finally exposing them for what they’ve done."
“India imposes huge tariffs on us—massive. You can’t even sell anything there… But they’ve agreed to cut them down significantly because somebody is finally exposing them for what they’ve done," he added.
Trump had previously called India a “tariff king" and a “big abuser" during a White House press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the difficulties of selling to India. He also pointed out the nearly $100 billion trade deficit with India and announced plans for negotiations to address these trade imbalances.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also criticized India during a press briefing, stating that the country imposes a 150 percent tariff on American alcohol and a 100 percent tariff on agricultural products.
“I have a handy-dandy chart here that shows not just Canada, but tariffs across the board. For example, American cheese and butter face nearly a 300 percent tariff in Canada. Meanwhile, in India, there’s a 150 percent tariff on American alcohol. Do you think that’s helping Kentucky bourbon get exported to India? I don’t think so. They also impose a 100 percent tariff on agricultural products," she said.
