Stock Market Live Updates: Equity markets closed on a strong note Tuesday, with benchmark indices posting solid gains across the board. The BSE Sensex jumped 1,089.18 points, or 1.49%, to settle at 74,227.08, while the Nifty 50 surged 374.25 points, or 1.69%, ending the day at 22,535.85.
The rally was broad-based, with 2,968 stocks advancing, 843 declining, and 115 remaining unchanged, reflecting strong bullish sentiment in the broader market.
At day’s high, BSE Sensex zoomed over 1,700 points to trade above 74,800. The Nifty 50 gained 500 points, to trade above 22,650 around 1:30 pm.
On the Nifty, Jio Financial, Shriram Finance, Titan Company, Cipla, and Bharat Electronics emerged as the top gainers. Power Grid stood out as the only loser on the index.
All sectoral indices closed in the green, underscoring the strength of the rally. Capital Goods, Consumer Durables, FMCG, Oil & Gas, PSU Banks, Realty, Telecom, and Media sectors saw robust gains, rising between 2% and 4%.
Broader markets also participated in the uptrend, with the BSE Midcap index climbing 1.8% and the Smallcap index gaining 2%, outperforming the frontline indices.
Investors now turn their focus to the upcoming RBI monetary policy meeting on April 9, where the central bank’s stance on the repo rate will be closely watched for cues on the interest rate trajectory and future market direction.
Global Cues
Asian markets traded higher on Tuesday, showing a sharp rebound from the losses in the previous session.
Japanese markets led the regional rally, with the Nikkei 225 rising 5.34% and the Topix climbing 5.53%.
South Korea’s Kospi gained 2.26%, and the Kosdaq rose 2.35%. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index futures indicated a weaker opening.
The US stock market closed mixed on Monday following President Donald Trump’s warning of additional tariffs on Chinese imports.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 349.26 points, or 0.91%, to close at 37,965.60. The S&P 500 declined 11.83 points, or 0.23%, to end at 5,062.25, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 15.48 points, or 0.10%, closing at 15,603.26.

The heightened uncertainty and volatility that has gripped markets worldwide will linger for some more time. There are some significant takeaways from the ongoing chaos. One, the trade war is likely to be confined to the US and China. Others, including the EU and Japan, have opted for negotiations. India has already started negotiations on a BTA with US. Two, the risk of a recession in the US has increased. Three, China is likely to be the worst-hit economy. Trump’s threat of another 50% tariff on China will, if carried out, almost freeze Chinese exports to US. Four, China will try to dump its products like metals in other countries, and this will keep international metal prices depressed.
Investors may continue in wait and watch mode since it will take time for clarity to emerge. However, since India’s macros are stable and we can grow at around 6% in FY26 and the valuations are fair particularly in largecaps, long-term investors can start nibbling at high quality largecaps like the leading financials. Since Trump is unlikely to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals at this stage, pharma stocks, which are attractively priced now, appear to be good buys.
