After Champions Trophy, BCCI Backs Rohit Sharma As Captain For England Test Series: 'The Right Candidate'
Rohit Sharma has reportedly earned BCCI and selection committee's backing to continue leading India in Tests.

The best thing about time is, it changes.
The popular phrase rings true for Rohit Sharma who a couple of months ago had dropped himself from India‘s playing XI in a stunning move during the fifth Test of the Australia tour following a run of low scores amidst murmurs over his red-ball future. Fast forward to today, he’s reportedly earned the BCCI, and the selection committee’s backing to continue as Team India captain for the five-match Test tour of England later this year.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Rohit’s performance as a captain during India’s invincible run at the recent Champions Trophy in Dubai has convinced the board and selectors that the veteran is the “right candidate" to lead India in what is expected to be a challenging tour which will also kickstart the team’s campaign in the next ICC World Test Championship cycle (2025-27).
“He (Rohit) has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket," the publication quoted a source as saying.
Rohit himself has ruled out international retirement multiple times ever since India defeated New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy to win their second ICC title in 10 months.
During an interaction with the media, the 37-year-old had said he’s not quitting ODIs and to not spread rumours around his future.
However, he hasn’t committed to continuing till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open," Rohit told the ICC.
India’s England tour starts from June 20.
