Watch: PM Narendra Modi Breaks Into Laughter As New Zealand PM Jokes About Champions Trophy Loss
New Zealand PM Luxon and Indian PM Modi shared a cricket joke after their defense meeting. Luxon thanked Modi for not mentioning NZ's Champions Trophy loss and avoided NZ's Test series win.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, shared a hilarious cricket joke after their defense cooperation meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
In the press meet after the event PM Luxon said he really appreciates PM Modi for not bringing up New Zealand’s defeat to India in the recent 2025 Champions Trophy, while also reminding him of the Kiwis’ big 3-0 win in last year’s Test series in the Asian country. PM Luxon hilariously mentioned that such a discussion could lead to a ‘major diplomatic incident’. PM Modi was seen laughing about it nearby.

“I do want to say to the Prime Minister I really have appreciated him not raising another recent loss of New Zealand to India in the recent game that we played in Dubai. But I haven’t mentioned any of the Test series wins that we had on our recent trips to India either. So, let’s just keep it that way and avoid a major diplomatic incident," PM Luxon was quoted as saying.
PM Luxon also praised the men’s Indian cricket team’s performance and said, “During PM Modi’s tenure, the men in blue (Indian cricket team) have been the most dominant side in cricket, most recently winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai against my men in black (New Zealand cricket team). They broke many many New Zealanders’ hearts in the process, including mine. I will be the bigger person and just say congratulations," as quoted by news agency PTI.
India and New Zealand have had a lot of good, close contests in recent times in ICC events. The Champions Trophy went India’s way, as they won their first title in the event since 2013.
However, a lot of Indian fans saw it as sweet revenge because only a few months ago Tom Latham’s Test side handed India the first-ever home whitewash in the format by beating them 3-0 in the series.
