Aurangzeb’s tomb became the center of controversy in Maharashtra as political leaders traded barbs over the violence that erupted in Nagpur on March 17.

The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, has been covered by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The tomb became the center of controversy in Maharashtra as political leaders traded barbs over the violence that erupted in Nagpur on March 17. The police said that 12 policemen, including 3 DCPs, were injured in the violence.

Earlier, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar District Collector Dilip Swamy prohibited flying of drones in Khultabad city limits till April 18. The district administration has declared a temporary red zone and the prohibition was was ordered under Section 163 (1) of the Indian Civil Security Code and Section 24 of Drones Rules, 2021.

Police said there was a high possibility of vandalism or destruction of Aurangzeb’s tomb which may create a serious problem of law and order.

A curfew was imposed in multiple areas of Nagpur under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) after tensions over the demand to remove Aurangzeb’s grave. The restrictions will remain in place until further notice in Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar, an official order stated.

Amid row over Aurangzeb’s tomb, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “No invader should be glorified. Glorifying invaders means committing treason – and Bharat (India) cannot accept any such treason under any circumstances. The invaders who attacked our values and beliefs, today’s new Bharat is not ready to accept them."
