Haryana Police Clear Shambhu Border Blockades After Punjab Removes Farmers From Protesting Site

Shambhu Border Farmer Protests: The Haryana Police removed blockades at the Shambhu border after the situation on Punjab’s side of the border was controlled after clearing barricades and protestors.
The Punjab Police detained fasting farmer activist Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha head Sarvan Singh Pandher as well as other prominent agitators in Mohali as they were returning after attending a meeting with a central government delegation in Chandigarh.

Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema defended the eviction of farmers from the protest sites and said that the action was taken as they want to open Shambhu and Khanauri borders. He said, “We want to open Shambhu and Khanauri borders. The demands of the farmers are against the central government and they should stage a protest in Delhi or somewhere else but should not block the roads of Punjab."
Why Are Farmers Protesting At The Shambhu Border
Protesting farmers were also evicted from the Shambhu and Khanauri borders after Wednesday’s meeting which was the seventh round of talks between the two sides since Feb 2024. Farmers have been protesting at border points since February 13 of the previous year, demanding that the Union government meet their demands. A key demand is a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.
Talks Between Farmers And Centre
Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, food and public distribution minister Prahlad Joshi and industries and commerce minister Piyush Goyal held a fresh round of talks with representatives of 28 farmer unions that form the Samyukt Kisan Union (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee in Chandigarh.
Following the talks that lasted over three hours, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere. The discussions took place in a positive and constructive manner. The talks will continue. The next meeting will take place on May 4."
