Mumbai: 19-Year-Old Man Gets Stuck In Food Grinder While Making Chinese Bhel, Dies

A 19-year-old man was killed after he got stuck inside a food grinder at a food stall in Mumbai, raising questions on the safety of workers employed in such small businesses.
Police identified the victim as Suraj Narayan Yadav, who was from Jharkhand. He was working at a food stall owned by one, Sachin Kothekar, over the past few months.

Kothekar was booked on charges of negligence and ignoring safety measures. The incident happened when Suraj was operating the industrial food grinder while preparing ingredients for manchurian and Chinese bhel, police said.
They said he did not have any experience operating the equipment, and had not received any kind of technical training to do so. They added that the owner of the foot stall had employed him without providing any safety equipment or training to him.
Police further said there were no safety measures in the room where Suraj was operating the grinder. They said a video of the incident shows that while working the grinder, his shirt got stuck and he was sucked in by the machine.
They also said the accident was so serious in nature that it became difficult to remove him from the machine. He was taken out of the grinder with the help of the police and fire brigade, and rushed to KEM Hospital where he was declared dead.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), but no arrests have been made yet.
