Prasun reportedly confessed to killing all three and told police that he took the extreme step because he had taken a loan of over Rs 15 crore for their tannery business, which they failed to repay. Prasun told police that he made a suicide pact with his family due to the staggering debt.

What Was The Suicide Pact?
Police investigation revealed that Pranay and Prasun, along with their wives, decided to consume ‘payesh’ (porridge) laced with sleeping pills to die by suicide on February 17. “This was their first plan which did not work out," news agency PTI quoted a police officer.
“After that, they planned that the women would jump off from the terrace but when the two wives denied to do so, they decided to slit their wrists," the officer added. Prasun said he and his wife helped smother their daughter with a pillow, with Romi held her legs as she was kicking.
After she died, Romi tried to slit her own wrists but failed, following which Prasun did the deed. Prasun also confessed to killing his sister-in-law, Sudeshna, the officer said, adding that all these happened on February 18.
The boy, his father and uncle went out in their car which crashed into a pillar of Metro Rail on early February 19 in a failed suicide attempt. The two brothers had been undergoing treatment at state-run Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital under police watch.
Prasun was arrested after he was discharged and police said Pranay would also be arrested later in connection with the murders. Kolkata Police detectives on Wednesday visited their Tangra residence and reconstructed the crime scene with Prasun Dey.
Reason Behind Suicide Pact: Rs 15 Crore Debt
The interrogation revealed that the family was under a massive debt of Rs 15 crore, which they failed to repay. The brothers decided to take the extreme step because of this debt, NDTV reported citing the police. The EMIs, close to Rs 47 lakh, of two of their three cars were also due, they added.
According to an earlier report, Pratip Dey, 14, Sudeshna’s son, alleged that Pranay and Prasun killed his mother and aunt for backing out of the suicide pact and turned on him. The teen said that he survived the attempt by using breath control techniques to play dead after his uncle tried to smother him with a pillow.
When he went upstairs, he saw his father and uncle preparing to die by suicide after ‘payesh’, mixed with sedatives, failed to killed them. When they saw him, they convinced him to join them, which he agreed to, as all his loved ones were dead. He told the commission, “What’s the point in living?"
The autopsy report of the three deceased revealed that the slits on the women’s wrists were not self-inflicted, indicating they were forcibly cut. Both had throat slashes and died due to massive blood loss. The 14-year-old girl had bruises on her chest, legs, lips, and head, and had also been poisoned.
Kolkata Police had ruled out external involvement in the tragic murders and pointing to two brothers from the family as the sole perpetrators of the crime.
