Dhanush Says His Popular Song Kolaveri Di Still ‘Haunts Him’: ‘We Forgot About It...’

It has been over 12 years since Why This Kolaveri Di? became a viral sensation, yet Dhanush continues to be asked about the iconic track. Speaking at an event hosted by News18, the actor admitted the song still “haunts" him, reflecting on its unexpected success.
When asked to sing the song at the event, Dhanush appeared surprised. Laughing, he said, “Kolaveri Di… that song still continues to haunt me." He further explained how the song came to life, revealing it was created late at night and nearly forgotten by the next morning. “We found an icon on the computer screen saying Kolaveri Di. We opened it, and then it hit us—oh, we made this. We made it and forgot about it. We found it funny, but we never thought it would be such a big sensation. These things, you can’t plan. God should consider you worthy."

The quirky Tanglish track, featuring Dhanush’s vocals and lyrics with music by Anirudh Ravichander, became a massive internet phenomenon upon release. It was created for 3, a film directed by Dhanush’s ex-wife, Aishwarya Rajinikanth, and starring Dhanush alongside Shruti Haasan. Despite the movie’s heavy subject matter, the lighthearted song about heartbreak struck a chord with audiences and became one of India’s most-searched YouTube videos at the time.
