Khauf Writer Smita Singh Shares What Sets Her Horror Series Apart: ‘It’s Raw And Genuine’
Ahead of the film’s release, creator and writer Smita Singh opened up about what makes the series different from conventional horror shows.

Writer Smita Singh is all set to bring a fresh twist to the horror genre with her latest project, Khauf. Ever since the trailer was released, the upcoming suspense horror series has been sending waves of excitement and fear among fans. Directed by Pankaj Kumar, Surya Balakrishnan and produced by Matchbox Shots, the eight-part series promises audiences a spine-chilling experience that goes beyond jump scares and cliches.
Ahead of the film’s release, creator and writer Smita Singh opened up about what makes the series different from conventional horror shows. The intense and thrilling film blends deeply supernatural aspects with emotional storytelling. “The way we’ve approached and filmed it—it’s raw and genuine. We have avoided comedy, embellishments, or diluting what’s truly terrifying," Smita Singh was quoted as saying by Filmibeat.

Promising that Khauf will deliver an unyielding horror experience, the writer further explained what is setting it apart from the norm. “Rooted in realism, we have seamlessly intertwined it with the surreal to the point where it becomes indistinguishable. The fear in the mind and the danger in the world converge. It’s primal, visceral. This evolution – moving beyond just thrills to evoke profound dread – was missing. That’s the niche Khauf is poised to fill," she said.
A few days ago, the makers unveiled the trailer of the film. It opens with a girl who has shifted to New Delhi to restart her life. She is looking for a house but can’t find one within her price range. However, she is able to find a room in agirls’ hostel. But there’s a problem there. Someone is haunting her room, and other girls residing there are aware of it. They warn her to leave the place as soon as possible. The video then shows Rajat Kapoor as a mysterious character who practises evil things on girls.
This psychological horror drama series boasts a stellar ensemble cast, featuring Monika Panwar, Rajat Kapoor, Abhishek Chauhan, Chum Darang, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Shilpa Shukla in pivotal roles. Mark your calendars! The film is set to be released on April 18, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for audiences in India and over 240 countries and territories worldwide.
For those unaware, Smita Singh is known for her bold and impactful storytelling. Before Khauf, the writer had also been part of the writer’s team in films like Sacred Games and Raat Akeli Hai. Released in 2020, her acclaimed crime drama Raat Akeli Hai earned both praise and appreciation from critics and audiences.
