Kristen Stewart’s Directorial Debut, The Chronology Of Water, Joins Cannes Lineup In Un Certain Regard
Earlier this month, the Cannes Film Festival shared the first set of films coming to the Palace of Festivals and Congresses of Cannes.

The Cannes Film Festival is back with its 78th edition, featuring exciting new titles. Recently, new films were added to the lineup, including Lynne Ramsay-directed Die, My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The film, based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel, follows Lawrence’s character, a new mother struggling with love and madness, while her husband remains unaware of her situation. Kristen Stewart is also on the list with her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir. The film explores Yuknavitch’s journey of healing from abuse through swimming.
Reportedly, Lawrence and Pattinson’s film will be part of the main competition, alongside Edington by Ari Aster, The History of Sound by Oliver Hermanus, Woman and Child by Saeed Roustaee and The Mastermind by Kelly Reichardt, among others. Meanwhile, Stewart’s first film as a director will be featured in the Un Certain Regard section. Other films in this section include Homebound by Neeraj Ghaywan, Once Upon a Time in Gaza by Arab and Tarzan Nasser, Promised Sky by Erige Sehir and Love Me Tender by Anna Cazenave Cambet.

In an earlier interview with NET-A-PORTER, Kristen Stewart, speaking about her film, The Chronology of Water said, “My movie is about incest and periods and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch… but it’s gonna be a fu****g thrill ride. And I think that’s commercial, but I don’t think that I have any gauge on what that means. I think people would want to see that, but then… I think maybe people wanna watch movies about, like, Jesus and dogs."
Earlier this month, the Cannes Film Festival shared the first set of films coming to the Palace of Festivals and Congresses of Cannes. Big names on the list include Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, Nouvelle Vague directed by Richard Linklater, the Dardenne brothers’ Young Mothers and Spike Lee’s directorial Highest 2 Lowest. Tom Cruise-starrer Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning will also be screened at the festival, but it will play in the out-of-competition section.
This year’s Cannes Film Festival, happening from 13 to 24 May, has taken inspiration from French filmmaker Claude Lelouch’s 1966 classic A Man and a Woman, starring Anouk Aimee and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The official festival artwork is based on this film and for the first time, two different posters are being used for the same event.
