Days after Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) made it to the International Feature Film eligibility list at the 2025 Oscars, Jyoti Deshpande sat down for an interview, talking about its journey to the prestigious platform. Despande is also one of the producers of the film. Recently, during her appearance at IFFI Goa, she reflected on the women-led cinema while also talking about Aamir Khan’s involvement in the film.

Speaking with ETimes, Jyoti Deshpande was asked about the challenges while trying to promote women led cinema. Replying, she highlighted the importance of believing in your gut and purpose instead of focusing on discouragement. She said, “Lost Ladies didn’t have a big star cast, but we believed that people would come to watch the film. It is not easy. More people try to push you directly to OTT, and discourage you from coming to cinemas saying you’ll lose your money and won’t recover the costs. But sometimes, you have to follow your gut feel and purpose. I backed Lost Ladies with my total conviction."

Further, the producer also opened up on the feedback that she had been getting ever since they started promoting the film for the Oscars, “One of the best feedback you get is when you watch the film with the audience – how are they reacting to each character – when the brides get lost or the scenes of the cop played by Ravi Kishan. Those are precious moments that we live for. Lost Ladies is a very nuanced film."

“Lost Ladies is a sweet and simple film told authentically. But it packs a punch. It has conveyed a big message in a very simple way," added Jyoti Deshpande as she continued to shed light on the impact of the film.

Laapataa Ladies starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan was selected as India’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars. It explores the contrasting tales of two newlywed brides who get exchanged during a train ride, making for a situation that is a blend of humour and tragedy.

Meanwhile, the 97th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The prestigious event will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.
