K-pop idol Seulgi, born Kang Seul Gi, has once again proved why she is a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The Red Velvet star recently dropped a teaser for her highly anticipated comeback with her second mini album, Accidentally on Purpose, leaving her fans jaw-dropped with her bold avatar. While the stunning visuals have captivated many on the internet, it has also ignited a heated debate, with many international fans drawing a comparison to Charli XCX’s Brat aesthetic.

In the teaser video, Seulgi is seen dressed in an all-black outfit, exuding major superhero vibes in what seems like a Catwoman or Batwoman suit. As the video plays, the K-pop star, who has seemingly taken a vigilante-inspired persona, is seen storming into a mysterious gathering. She confidently strides across a table while a club-ready beat plays in the background. What should have been a celebratory moment for her fans quickly became a hot topic of discussion on the internet.

After she dropped the teaser on February 23, social media was flooded with reactions, where many international fans of the K-pop idol pointed out that Seulgi’s teaser is very similar to Charli XCX’s bold and rebellious Brat aesthetic. Particularly in the scene where the 31-year-old singer is seen walking on the table, her edgy style and pulsing electronic instrumentals.

On an X post captioned “Who else is doing it like Seulgi in the industry right now? OH MY GODDDD", a user wrote, “She stole Charli’s entire vibe but simply did a worse job, lol." Another pointed out, “The answer is Charli XCX. She copied the vibe." Someone else penned, “This is literally 360 Charli XCX music video."

However, Red Velvet’s loyal fandom, ReVeluvs, immediately came to her rescue and shut down the comparisons with the argument that Seulgi’s concept is rooted in classic vigilante and superhero themes, and not Charli XCX’s.

One fan said, “Apparently, you’re not allowed to dance on tables or make electronic/dance music (both things Seulgi had done before Brat came out). Pointing out similarities is cool, but it feels like #that album is all you guys know."

“Idiots in the quotes talking about her copying BRAT, y’all know nothing about music outside of mainstream pop, and it shows," another commentator said.

Someone also wrote, “People randomly saying this is Charlie XCX and brat nachos… Do y’all ever heard about something called DUBSTEP and how SM has a history with it?"

Speaking of Accidentally on Purpose, the 31-year-old K-pop idol is releasing her second mini album on March 10, 2025, at 6 PM KST.
