Toilet: Ek Prem Katha Producer Slams Jaya Bachchan’s ‘Flop Film’ Comment: 'Very Hurtful'

Jaya Bachchan, at a recent event, mocked Akshay Kumar’s 2017 release, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha while questioning its title. She also called it a ‘flop film’. Prerna Arora, the co-producer of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, has now responded to Jaya Bachchan’s remark. She shared that as a huge fan of the veteran actress, the comment felt especially hurtful. Arora also pointed out that the film’s box office numbers speak for themselves and urged Bachchan to take them into account.
“Let me first state that I am a huge, HUGE fan of Jayaji. For me, she is the ultimate. I can watch Guddi, Uphaar, Abhimaan, and Mili anytime, anywhere, and feel happy about life. It is, therefore, very hurtful to hear her say that our film Toilet Ek Prem Katha was a flop. Ma’am should check the box office figures. Our film earned a very handsome profit. It was one of the five biggest hits of 2017," Prerna Arora said while talking to Bollywood Hungama.

Arora admitted that even the team had initial doubts about the film’s title, as having the word toilet in it felt like a risky choice. However, after some discussion, they eventually decided to go ahead with it. She further shared that she has always been willing to take risks as a producer. She also noted that Jaya Bachchan herself took bold risks in her own career.
The producer said, “Jaya Ma’am took risks with her role choices all the time. She did Doosri Sita, where she played a woman who murders her abusive husband." She ended by saying how proud she is of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and that she’d love to show it to Jaya Bachchan—if the veteran actress is willing to watch it.
At India TV’s She Conclave, Jaya Bachchan was asked about films that align with government-backed social initiatives. When Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was cited as an example, the veteran actress didn’t hold back, questioning its very title. “Just look at the name! I would never go to watch such a movie. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha—is that even a title?" she remarked.
She then turned to the audience, asking if they would watch a film with such a name. When only a handful of people raised their hands, Bachchan reacted, “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai (It is a flop)."
