Lok Sabha Passes Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha at midnight on Wednesday, with 288 votes in favour and 232 against, after a 12-hour heated debate where the ruling NDA strongly defended the legislation as beneficial for minorities, while the opposition described it as “anti-Muslim".
Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday morning. The Bill was passed after all amendments moved by the opposition members were rejected by voice votes.
During the debate, Union Home Minister Amit Shah targeted the Congress for allegedly spreading misinformation on the Bill and assured that the legislation does not seek to interfere in Muslims’ religious matters.
Meanwhile, the Opposition claimed that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a weapon aimed at marginalising Muslims and usurping their personal laws and property rights.
