WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin has opened up on his relationship with CM Punk. The Texas Rattlesnake retired from full-time wrestling in 2003 at 38 and never got to face Punk in an official match, as the Second City Saint signed with the company about three years after his departure. There is still a long history between the two superstars, which includes a photograph from the mid-1990s when a teenage Punk met Austin somewhere and got a photo taken with him.

In an interview with Unlikely with Adrian Hernandez, Steve Austin talked about the photograph and his friendship with Punk. “Me and Punk are friends from way back," he said as per TJR Wrestling.

Steve Austin also talked about CM Punk being a big fan of his in the interview. “He was just a young kid. He was a Stone Cold fan back in the day," he said. The back-to-back Royal Rumble winner further spoke about how he admired CM Punk’s fearless promos in the WWE. “I’m a CM Punk fan. I’m a fan of his work and his promos. He can light somebody up," he added.

While CM Punk and Steve Austin didn’t talk regularly, they had nothing but respect for each other, according to the Texas Rattlesnake. “So, you know, we don’t talk a whole lot. We’ll send each other a text now and then, but when we’re probably really, really good friends and don’t talk a whole lot. We have a lot of mutual respect," he concluded.

Almost 19 years after retiring, Stone Cold Steve Austin got back into the ring at WrestleMania 38 in 2022. He headlined the event to face Kevin Owens. Then, CM Punk was competing under the banner of All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Austin later also opened up on John Cena’s new heel role in the WWE.

“It had to happen sooner or later, and finally it happened. So it’ll be interesting to see, you know, whether people accept him as a heel or if he has turned himself into more babyface. I think it remains to be seen as the story unfolds," he said.

Steve Austin also claimed he hadn’t spoken to any WWE official about a potential appearance at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Belonging to the state of Nevada, it is probable that Austin could make a blockbuster return to the WWE later this year.
