Sarkari Naukri
A government job (Sarkari Naukri in Hindi) refers to working in any department of the Central government or the state governments. The Central and state governments carry out the recruitment process through their respective agencies to fill vacant posts in various departments and government institutes. Along with job security and other perks, a person having a government job gets a fixed amount of salary according to the prescribed pay grade.
While Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Service Exams (CSE) for Central government job vacancies, Public Service Commissions (PSCs) in each state fill the state government job vacancies.
UPSC and Civil Services
Civil services jobs – Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), and Indian Police Services (IPS) – are widely considered prestigious in India. Every year, UPSC conducts CSE for recruiting people for 24 services of the Central government. The CSE is popularly known as the ‘IAS exam’ due to a large number of candidates preferring IAS over other services.
Around 5 lakh candidates attempt UPSC CSE each year, which is conducted in 3 phases: 1) Prelims and 2) Mains 3) Interviews. The pass percentage in this national-level competitive exam is only about 0.2% making it one of the toughest in India.
UPSC has already released the annual exam calendar for the various national-level exams in 2023 on its official website - upsc.gov.in. The notification for UPSC CSE 2023 will be uploaded on the commission’s website on February 1, 2023, and the exam will be conducted on May 28, 2023.
UPSC also conducts CDS Exam twice a year for the aspirants interested in joining the defense force in the Indian Air Force, Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Officer’s Training Academy. The selection is done through an online exam, interview, and medical examination.
Government Jobs and Vacant Posts
In July 2022, the Central government informed that over 7.22 lakh people got permanent central government jobs in the past eight years. The government received over 22 crore applications for these jobs. There were around 9.79 lakh vacant posts in central government departments against the sanctioned strength of 40.35 lakh, as on March 1, 2021. As many as 30,55,876 Central government civilian employees were in positions against the sanctioned strength. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked various government departments and ministries to undertake the recruitment of 10 lakh people on a “mission mode” in the next year and a half.
