A Chinese man, in his 40s, survived a heart attack while he was helping his teenage son with his homework. This incident from eastern China’s Zhejiang province has reignited discussions over the intense academic pressure faced by Chinese students and their parents, South China Morning Post reported.

As per the Zhejiang media outlet City Express, Zhang was immediately rushed to the hospital. He was later diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction.

Soon after, Zhang underwent emergency artery bypass surgery at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated with the Medical School of Zhejiang University, while the doctors were successfully able to save his life.

Doctors at the hospital have linked the heart attack to premature coronary artery disease, which is often exacerbated by emotional stress.

As per the South China Morning Post report, Zhang had been actively supervising his son in his schoolwork and even used to arrange additional practice sessions for him every evening. However, this allegedly strained their relationship as the child felt overwhelmed by the academic pressure that was being imposed on him by his father.

The father even got his son enrolled in several cram schools and used to personally handle his drop-offs and pickups.

Zhang is now among several other parents in China facing hospitalisation due to various medical issues that arise from the stress of tutoring their children for a better future.
