“One hour and fifteen minutes in? The whole thing is going great. We’re laughing, the technical questions are behind us, and we even spun off into some interesting “what-ifs." Now we’re just discussing methodologies, various processes, and talking about the company itself. The Chief of Staff brings up the third interview: Let’s get it scheduled before we forget," the man shared that the interview process was going well until he received an unexpected email.
It was a “Dear John" type of message, letting him know his application was rejected so they could move forward with other candidates.
He went on to describe the interviewers’ reactions after he informed them about the rejection email. They were visibly shocked and angry, hinting that “someone’s friend got hired" without the Chief of Staff’s knowledge.
“The SPM was silent and typing furiously. The Chief of Staff was also typing a million words per minute, but he hushed the developer. This led to an awkward few minutes of silence. It finally ended with the Chief of Staff exhaling loudly and staring right at his webcam to say: ‘I’m not sure what is going on. I’ll get back to you by the end of the week. Thanks.’ Then I was kicked out of the Zoom call," he added.
The user concluded the post by describing the incident as “hilariously unfortunate." Meanwhile, social media users had divided reactions to the situation. While many expressed annoyance, some even shared their own experience. A user wrote, “Interviewers like that who don’t cover up BS are great. Feels like you are interviewed by an actual decent human."
Another added, “It’s absolutely abysmal a chief of staff has 0 empathy or resonation skills. The premise of any online community and workplace is relationship building, and this team showed they can’t communicate or take accountability."
A user shared her husband’s story and wrote, “My husband once interviewed with amazon for a corporate dev role and on the way to his car in their parking lot, his phone buzzed and it was their rejection! Like damn, that was lickity split. I kept teasing him like what did you do, fart?"
One of the comments read, “Brutal, being rejected via email during the interview. Sounds like you dodged a bullet honestly, reflective of what it would be like to work there."
In response to the supportive comments, the user also explained how such actions often end the candidate’s confidence that they put during the interview.
