London – the city of iconic landmarks, royal charm and luxurious lifestyle – is known for its blend of history and modernity. At the same time, it is also infamous for being one of the most expensive cities on the planet. For many young professionals, the dream of living here often comes with the reality of splitting rent with roommates or settling for less-than-ideal accommodations. Amidst this, an Indian man, Aryan Bhattacharya, on Instagram shared a slice of his reality and let’s just say it wasn’t the glamorous London life you’d expect for Rs 1 lakh a month. In a viral video, he vented his frustration about his flat, likening it to a chawl (a term used in India for low-cost, cramped housing).

“Chawl ka feeling bhi experience kar liya UK mai," Aryan wrote. In the clip, he offered viewers a glimpse of his flat – water dripping steadily from his ceiling, creating an indoor “waterfall". To deal with the mess, he had placed utensils beneath the leak to catch the drops, all while lamenting that no plumber was available to fix the issue at night. The text overlay on his video summed it up: “1,00,000 ka rent mai chawl ka feeling in the UK."

The post struck a chord online, racking up thousands of views and several reactions in the comments. Responses ranged from practical advice to outright criticism. Some viewers suggested Aryan contact the local council for assistance. “Your landlord cannot charge you if the house isn’t up to standard," one user pointed out. Others, however, took a harsher stance. “You chose to move to the UK knowing how expensive it is. If you can’t adapt, maybe it’s time to return home," another wrote bluntly.

Among the mixed reactions, a few users shared their own tales of rental woes. “I dealt with a bathroom leak for four days straight because the plumber wasn’t available. It was a nightmare, especially since I had to go to the office daily. But once it was fixed, I felt a weird sense of achievement," a person revealed.

Others, however, found humour in Aryan’s clip. “Honestly, chawls are better—you don’t get water dripping like this! Come back to India," a user joked. Another said, “Renting in the UK is pure compromise; you get less for more."
