‘What Sorcery Is This?’ Japan’s Self-Closing Jam Jar Stuns Internet
A viral video from Japan shows a young girl who places the lid on top of the jam jar which closes automatically.

Japan has always amazed the world with its cutting-edge technology and innovations. The country seems to be living in a future that is still years away for most of the world. One such recent innovation has stunned social media users and it is related to something as simple as a grocery item: a jar of jam.
A video shared on Instagram by Steven W. shows a young girl demonstrating an incredibly cool feature: a jam jar lid that closes by itself. Yes, you read that right. In the video, the girl places the lid on top of the jam jar and to everyone’s surprise, the lid closes automatically.

“What the heckkkk???" Steven exclaims in disbelief. In his caption, he asks, “How is this possible?" and honestly, many of us are wondering the same thing.
The video gained over 20 million views so far. In the comment section, users had a lot of interesting reactions to the self-closing jam jar.
One user mentioned, “I buy this jam all the time because there is no sugar in it. I haven’t realised that the lid closes itself until now. But you still need to tighten it though."
Another user was amazed, asking, “What sorcery is this?" while someone else added, “Japan on another level."
There were also some users who tried to explain the magic behind it.
One person shared, “It’s the ridges in the lid that make it possible," while another commented, “It was actually an accidental design, but it does indeed close due to the angle of the grooves in the glass. You still have to tighten it a bit though."
An individual pointed out, “For the people asking: it’s only this brand, and it’s because of the angle of the glass that secures the lid. It’s more tilted than normally, and it was done by accident."
While these comments offer reasonable guesses, there is actually a fascinating scientific logic behind the magic. The self-closing jam jars went viral around 2022 with many videos showing this quirky feature. These jars come from the company Aohata.
According to a YouTube channel called VT Physics, the secret lies in the design of the jar. The video explained that the ridges around the neck of the jar are placed at a specific angle.
Regular jars have ridges at a shallow 6-degree angle while Aohata’s jars have much steeper 10-degree ridges. This steeper angle creates a more effective gravitational pull and overcomes friction. This causes the lid to glide smoothly and close on its own which is much like an object sliding down a steep slope.
