The suspect was reportedly taken into custody, a post on the parish Facebook page stated.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann, of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, in a Facebook post, termed the incident a “senseless act of violence" and stated that there was “no ongoing threat to the community".
“I am heartbroken to share the tragic news of the death of Fr. Arul Carasala, who was fatally shot earlier today. This senseless act of violence has left us grieving the loss of a beloved priest, leader, and friend," Naumann wrote in the post.
“Fr. Carasala was a devoted and zealous pastor who faithfully served our Archdiocese for over twenty years, including as dean of the Nemaha-Marshall region. His love for Christ and His Church was evident in how he ministered to his people with great generosity and care. His parishioners, friends, and brother priests will deeply miss him," he added.
“There is no ongoing threat to the community, but I recognize the pain and shock that such an event brings. In moments like these, we turn to our Lord, who is close to the brokenhearted. As we grieve, may we find strength in our faith and in the hope of Christ’s Resurrection," his post read.
Carasala was ordained as a priest in 1994 in his native India and served in Kansas since 2004. He became a US citizen in 2011.
Since then, he had been the pastor at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, according to his profile on the parish website.
A post on the page claimed the priest was shot at the church rectory and died shortly after at a local hospital.
The Associated Press quoted Kris Anderson, the parish’s director of religious education, as saying, “From what we know, an older man walked up to him and shot him three times."
The reason for the killing was yet not known.
