What Is The Controversy?
Several world leaders had attended the funeral, including Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, among others.
While most others wore a black suit, Trump arrived wearing a blue suit paired with a light blue tie and an American flag lapel pin. He reportedly left early.
In contrast, US First Lady Melania Trump adhered to the prescribed norms and donned a long-sleeved black dress and a traditional black mantilla veil.
However, Trump was not the only one looking odd among those present; Prince William and former President Joe Biden also deviated from the norm.
All three outfits were different from the usual Vatican dress rules, which ask men at papal funerals to wear a formal black suit, black tie, and a black lapel pin.
Prince William represented King Charles III, who could not make it to the ceremony due to health reasons. He put on a classic dark suit and tie.
Joe Biden also opted to wear a blue tie.
According to Vatican protocols. The attire and order for Pope Francis’ funeral should be:
“For men, dark suit with a long black tie and a button of the same color on the left lapel of the jacket, where only Vatican honors can be placed. For women, a black dress, preferably long, of the same color as gloves and veil on the head, with the only allowed ornament being a string of pearls," Newsweek reported.
The debate about clothing comes just two months after Zelenskyy was criticized by a reporter at the White House for not wearing a suit during his Oval Office visit. Some reports also said that Trump was upset by what Zelenskyy wore.
How Did Netizens React?
The social media users called out President Trump for not following the prescribed dress code and called it “disrespectful".
“It takes some brass neck to have your administration attack another president for being disrespectfully dressed for a meeting and then turn up to the pope’s funeral in a blue suit," another user said.
A user remembered JD Vance’s heated exchange with Zelenskyy at the White House and took a potshot at him.
“Apparently, Trump does not know that you are supposed to have a black suit at a funeral. Note that Zelensky is correctly dressed (unlike Trump)," another user wrote on X.
