Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has said that KL Rahul is like a big brother to him, adding how the senior pro kept a hand on his shoulders to reassure him despite dropping a crucial catch during their match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, March 30.

Porel, who was the uncapped retention for Delhi in 2025, did his bit with an impressive 34 not out off 18 deliveries during his side’s successful chase against Hyderabad in Vishakhapatnam.

Porel had dropped Aniket Verma, SRH’s highest scorer on the day, but could heave a sigh of relief as he was eventually caught off a stunner from Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Porel was feeling a bit down when he dropped Verma but Rahul told him to forget the blip.

“KL Bhai is like a big brother. He supported me when I dropped the catch (Aniket). He said, ‘no worries’. While batting, he said, play your natural shots," Porel said while speaking to the media after the game.

Having played beside Axar during IPL 2023 and 2024, Porel has begun to understand his new captain better.

“Off the field, he’s very funny. On the field, he’s also a very motivated guy. Overall, the captaincy was really good. I enjoyed playing under his captaincy," Porel said.

The 22-year-old Bengal wicketkeeper played as a batter, and senior player Rahul returned to the setup after a one-match paternity break.

Being an experienced glovesman, Rahul read the wicket well and gave Porel insights as to how the track was behaving.

“After the first innings, he knew how the pitch was behaving. He backed me. It (the pitch) was really good. We had home matches last year as well. This year as well, the wicket is good," Porel said.

The Bengal wicketkeeper (34 not out, 18 balls) and Tristan Stubbs (21 not out, 14 balls) joined for a 51-run partnership for the fourth wicket to push Hyderabad to their second consecutive loss in this Indian Premier League.

Earlier, Aniket made a free-flowing 74 off 41 deliveries (5×4, 6×6), but their excessive aggression and five-wicket man Starc forced Hyderabad to settle for a sub-par 163 all out.
