“Amazing innings. I saw that innings. Keep it up. This is the start… Keep your head down and keep performing. All the best," Akram can be heard telling Abhishek in the video.
His 135 runs became the highest-ever T20I score for an Indian. It beat his Punjab teammate and childhood friend Shubman Gill’s record of 126* (99) against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in 2023. Overall, it was the sixth-best score in T20Is among full-member nations.
Moreover, Abhishek reached his hundred off just 37 balls, making it the third-fastest ton for full-member nations in the format, only behind South Africa’s David Miller and India’s ODI and Test skipper Rohit Sharma (35 balls each).
Abhishek hit 13 maximums in that knock, the highest for an Indian in a T20I innings. Among full-member countries, only Finn Allen (16), Sikander Raza (15), and Aaron Finch (14) have hit more.
“You can ask any player; such matches are very few (and far between)," Abhishek had said after that match. “I would say it was all possible because of the efforts I put in the practice, the backing I got from the coaches and the captain when I was not getting the runs or not bowling well," Abhishek said in the post-match press conference. “All these things calculate (work out well) at the end, and I had the belief that on my day, I will play an innings like this," he added.
India won the five-T20I series against England 4-1 and then beat them 3-0 in the following ODI series, to bring a ton of momentum to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Here, they beat both Bangladesh and Pakistan by six wickets. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century and Kuldeep
Yadav’s three-wicket haul proved too good for the Men in Green,
