Gautam Gambhir's Opinion Crucial For Deciding Rohit Sharma's Future As Test Captain: Report
Gautam Gambhir's opinion will reportedly have a big influence on BCCI's decision on Rohit Sharma's future as Test captain.

Indian men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir‘s opinion will carry ‘a lot of weightage’ in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s decision over Rohit Sharma‘s future as the Test captain, according to PTI. The news agency’s report suggests that the BCCI is yet to finalise whether Rohit will lead India on the summer’s Test tour of England but a decision is expected to be made during the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
Speculation about Rohit’s future in the longest format has been raging since last year when India lost back-to-back series against New Zealand and Australia under him, losing a place in the upcoming World Test Championship final. In the latter, he dropped himself before the fifth Test, accepting that his poor form wasn’t helping the team. Now, reports since Saturday morning have suggested that he could retain that job.

“Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney where he explained that a team can’t carry on with multiple out of form batters. After Australia Tests, India haven’t played any Tests and hence there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also Rohit never said he doesn’t want to play Tests," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously with all matches televised, they always don’t need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player from up close," the source added. “So once IPL starts, the blueprint for England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir’s view point will have a lot of weightage," he added.
Rohit’s ODI future was also in doubt recently. However, after winning the 2025 Champions Trophy, he clarified that he wasn’t going anywhere from the 50-over format.
India will play five away Tests against England — a series that they haven’t had much success in this century. It’ll mark the start of the next World Test Championship cycle.
In the IPL, Rohit will feature for his long-term franchise, the Mumbai Indians. They kick off their campaign against Chennai Super Kings on March 23.
