Ahead of the latest season of the Indian Premier League, let's take a look at all the Purple Cap winners in the competition's history.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will commence on March 22 in Kolkata. The opening game of the franchise tournament will see last year’s winners, Kolkata Knight Riders, take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens. Apart from the 10 teams slogging it out for the IPL silverware, the season will likely witness a heated battle for the coveted Purple Cap award too. In the previous 17 editions, several legends have won this individual crown. West Indies legend Dwayne Bravo was the first to win the Purple Cap twice. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel are the other two to have finished as the leading wicket-takers of a season twice.

    IPL 2008 – Sohail Tanvir (Rajasthan Royals)

    The inaugural season of the IPL saw Sohail Tanvir win the Purple Cap. He scalped 22 wickets in 11 matches that season.

    IPL 2009 – RP Singh (Deccan Chargers)

    The second IPL season saw RP Singh emerge as the tournament’s top-wicket-taker. He dismissed 23 batters including a four-wicket haul.

    IPL 2010 – Pragyan Ojha (Deccan Chargers)

    In 2010, Pragyan Ojha scalped 21 wickets to win the Purple Cap. He played 16 matches that year, bowling at an economy of 7.29.

    IPL 2011 – Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians)

    Sri Lanka pace legend Lasith Malinga was at the peak of his powers in the 2011 season. He scalped 28 wickets in 16 matches, boasting one five-wicket haul in the tournament.

    IPL 2012 – Morne Morkel (Delhi Capitals)

    South Africa speedster Morne Morkel led the bowling charts in 2012 with 25 wickets. He played 16 matches, bowling at an economy of 7.19.

    IPL 2013 – Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings)

    West Indies legend Dwayne Bravo was the first player to reach the 30-wicket figure in a single IPL season. He dismissed 32 batters in 18 matches in 2013.

    IPL 2014 – Mohit Sharma (Chennai Super Kings)

    Indian pacer Mohit Sharma won his first Purple Cap in 2014. He scalped 23 wickets, taking one four-wicket haul that season.

    IPL 2015 – Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings)

    Dwayne Bravo became the first player to win the Purple Cap twice in the 2015 IPL season. He dismissed 26 batters in 17 games.

    IPL 2016 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

    India fast-bowler Bhuvneswar Kumar emerged as IPL’s top wicket-taker in 2016. He took 23 wickets in 17 matches, bowling three maiden overs in the tournament.

    IPL 2017 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

    Bhuvneshwar Kumar won his second successive Purple Cap in 2017 with 26 wickets in 15 matches. He took one five-wicket haul that season.

    IPL 2018 – Andrew Tye (Punjab Kings)

    Seven years ago, Andrew Tye won his first IPL Purple Cap in a Punjab Kings shirt. He scalped 24 wickets in 15 matches, taking three four-wicket hauls.

    IPL 2019 – Imran Tahir (Chennai Super Kings)

    South Africa legend Imran Tahir dismissed 26 batters in the 2019 season to become the tournament’s top wicket-taker. He bowled one maiden over and took two four-wicket hauls.

    IPL 2020 – Kagiso Rabada (Delhi Capitals)

    Kagiso Rabada became the second player to breach the 30-wicket mark five years ago. He took 30 wickets in 17 matches, bowling one maiden.

    IPL 2021 – Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

    Harshal Patel matched Dwayne Bravo’s record in the 2021 season with 32 wickets in 15 matches. He bowled at an economy of 8.14 throughout the campaign.

    IPL 2022 – Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals)

    Yuzvendra Chahal topped the IPL bowling charts in 2022 with 27 wickets in 17 matches. Chahal took one four-wicket haul and a fifer in the tournament.

    IPL 2023 – Mohammad Shami (Gujarat Titans)

    Indian pacer Mohammad Shami was IPL’s top wicket-taker in the 2023 season with 28 scalps to his name. He played 17 matches, bowling at an average of 18.64.

      IPL 2024 – Harshal Patel (Punjab Kings)

      Harshal Patel won his second Purple Cap award last year for taking 24 wickets in a Punjab Kings shirt. He played 14 matches, bowling at a 19.87 average.
