Indian vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah hit the gym at the National Cricket Academy (or the Centre of Excellence) in Bengaluru and shared a photo update of his recovery on Thursday. Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy after failing to recover from his back injury sustained in early January.

The pacer’s body gave up in the final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy after he had bowled the most overs in the series till then. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had expressed hope that Bumrah would be back before the ICC tournament but while announcing a revised squad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that wasn’t the case and named Harshit Rana as the replacement.

In his post, Bumrah put up a photo from the NCA gym, with the caption, ‘Rebuilding💪’, check it out here:

Bumrah is said to have begun his rehab after about a month of complete rest. The Champions Trophy begins on February 19 with India’s first match to be held in Dubai against Bangladesh on February 20.

Why was Jasprit Bumrah ruled out?

After the announcement, a PTI report revealed that Bumrah’s scan reports had come out as ‘okay’ but the NCA medical team left the decision on chief selector Ajit Agarkar to make a call whether he should be rushed back. It said that Agarkar learned from his predecessor Chetan Sharma’s mistake and didn’t want to ‘take a chance’.

“Bumrah was asked to off-load for five weeks after which his rehabilitation at NCA happened under strength & conditioning trainer Rajnikanth and physio Thulasi. The report sent by NCA head Nitin Patel clearly states that while he has completed his rehabilitation and scan reports seemed to be okay, it couldn’t be concluded whether he would be bowling fit by the time the tournament starts. Hence the selectors didn’t take any risk," a top BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI on Tuesday night.

“Nitin left the ball in Ajit’s (chief selector Agarkar) court and hence no one would want to stick their necks out and take the risk of putting an unfit player in squad. If medical team doesn’t green-light fully, how can the selection committee take that risk," the official added.

“The stakes are too high and it would have been a complete embarrassment had Bumrah broken down in a match. The NCA led by Nitin Patel had once burnt their hands in 2022 when they pushed Bumrah for the bilateral series against Australia before the T20 World Cup and he had broken down to be out for one year. That was Chetan Sharma’s committee and so Agarkar didn’t want to take a chance," he concluded.

Mumbai Indians will hope that Bumrah is able to recover in time for IPL 2025 in March.
