Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, known for speaking his mind, feels Shama should be shamed for her now-deleted post in which she advised Rohit to lose weight besides calling him “the most unimpressive captain" the country has ever had.
“I only want to say one thing, jiska kaam usi ko saaje aur kare to danda baaje (the work only suits those skilled enough to do it; if done by anyone else, it’s ruined). Indian cricketers, people and the land are dearer to me than my own life. If someone in the political system makes such a statement about a player who has brought pride to our nation, that person should be ashamed," Yograj told news agency ANI.
Yograj, father of legendary allrounder and two-time world cup winner Yuvraj Singh, further added that he would’ve asked people making fun of sportsperson to leave the country while demanding action against Shama.
“They have no right to stay in our nation. Cricket is our religion; we lost against New Zealand and Australia, and a lot of things were said about Rohit and Virat. We stood up for them. I feel so sad. These things happen in Pakistan. Their former star player said, ‘Who will eat so many bananas?’ (Taking a jibe at Wasim Akram). Action should be taken. This should not be tolerated. If I were the prime minister, I would have said, ‘Pack your bags and leave the country’," Yograj said.
Shama, after deleting her post, clarified her remarks claiming she’s been attacked for “no reason".
“It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sports person should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying that? It is a democracy," she said.
Congress Distances Itself From Remark
Senior leader of Congress Pawan Khera on X said the party doesn’t endorse the comments made by its national spokersperson.
“Dr. Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party’s position," Khera wrote in a post on X.
“She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy," he added.
