Wanindu Hasaranga starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 4/35, while Nitish Rana gave them a defendable score after smashing 81 runs off 36 balls in the first innings for the Royals.

Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 32 and MS Dhoni’s 11-ball 16 gave CSK hope, but the target proved to be too far for the Super Kings.

The duo took the chase down to the final over with Tushar Deshpande leaking 19 runs in the penultimate over.

Wanindu Hasaranga provided the key wickets through the middle overs by removing Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Dube and Vijay Shankar before they dealt major damage with the bat. Dube, who came in as CSK’s impact substitute, took on the spinners but was unable to capitalise on his start as he fell for just 18 runs, thanks to a brilliant catch by Riyan Parag by the covers to turn the tides in the Royals’ favour.

The Sri Lankan international also got the big wicket of Chennai skipper, who took the game deep with a valiant knock of 64 in 44 balls.

Jofra Archer started things off brilliantly as he got the big wicket of the in-form Rachin Ravindra in the first over of the second innings.

Nitish Rana’s promotion to number three proved to be a masterstroke for the Royals as the southpaw went on to score a quickfire 81 in 36 balls laced with 10 boundaries and five maximums. RR’s stand-in skipper, Parag, showed glimpses of the same form from last year but was unable to capitalise on his start as he fell after scoring 37 runs.
