Rishabh Pant hasn’t had an ideal start to life as Lucknow Super Giants‘ captain and player in IPL 2025 after being signed by the franchise for a record-breaking amount at the mega auction last year. Pant’s LSG have lost two of their opening three matches of the season and the wicketkeeper-batter himself has not been able to make any significant contribution with the bat so far.

In LSG’s season opener, a high-scoring affair against the Delhi Capitals, Pant was out for a duck before scoring 15 in a big win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Against Punjab Kings on Tuesday night – LSG’s first home game of the season – Pant mustered 2 before becoming Glenn Maxwell’s victim. PBKS went on to win the match by eight wickets.

Following the match, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen having an intense discussion with Pant. Goenka appeared quite animated in a stark reminder of his infamous chat with former LSG captain KL Rahul last IPL season. The franchise released Rahul ahead of the mega auction after they finished 7th on the points table.

The latest defeat has pushed LSG to the sixth spot on the table currently being led by Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

During a conversation with the broadcasters, Pant said LSG were 20-25 runs short of what would have been an ideal total to defend but also admitted they are still trying to asses the home conditions.

“It (the total) wasn’t enough, we were 20-25 runs short, but that’s part and parcel of the game. Still assessing the conditions at our home ground. It’s always going to be difficult to get a big total when you lose early wickets, but each and every player is trying hard to take the game forward," Pant said.

LSG have little time to recover from the latest setback as they next host Mumbai Indians this Friday. MI have bounced back after starting their own season with back-to-back defeats as they brushed aside defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets earlier this week.
