Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Indian batter Abhishek Sharma for Rs 14 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, but the left-handed batter from Punjab has failed to fire for the Hyderabad-based franchise in the IPL this year. He scored 24 runs for the Pat Cummins-led side in the first match of IPL 2025, played on March 23, and then got out after making 6, 1 and 2 runs against LSG, Delhi Capitals and KKR. Despite poor form in recent matches, Abhishek was retained in the playing XI for Sunday’s match at home against Gujarat Titans, but once again he failed to deliver.

The 24-year-old batter got off to a good start at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 6 but failed to convert it into a big knock and return back to the pavilion after making 18 runs from 16 balls. In an attempt to play a big shot against Mohammed Siraj, he handed a simple catch to Rahul Tewatia on the fourth ball of the fifth over of SRH’s innings.

Abhishek was SRH’s top performer in the IPL last year. He scored 484 runs in 16 matches for the Pat Cummins-led side in IPL 2024 and played a big role in the team’s run to the final. He hammered 42 sixes for the Orange Army in the 17th edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league, and his super show with the bat also helped him earn a place in India’s T20I team.

Abhishek’s poor form with the bat in IPL 2025 has come as a shock to fans because he was in good touch ahead of the start of the tournament. In his last T20I match for India, Abhishek hammered 135 runs from just 54 balls against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 5. His knock of 135 runs helped the Suryakumar Yadav-led side win the match by 150 runs, and he also broke Shubman Gill’s record for the highest individual score for India in a T20I match.
