The IPL 2025 season will start on March 22 and conclude on May 25, 2025.
When the IPL was launched in 2008, eight teams were part of the tournament. It briefly expanded to 10 teams before returning to its original composition. However, from 2022 onwards, two new franchises were added, making the total number of teams 10.
When there were eight teams, each team played the others twice in a home-and-away format. The winner was awarded two points, no points for losing and one each if there's no result. At the end of the league phase, the four teams with the maximum number of points qualified for the semi-finals followed by the final. The format was later tweaked to include playoffs (Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2) instead of the two semifinals. The playoffs are then followed by a final. With the introduction of two new teams, the format was tweaked again. The 10 participants are now divided into two virtual groups, and not every team plays against every other team twice during the season.
For IPL 2025, there will be a total of 74 matches, starting from March 22 and running until May 25.
IPL playoffs comprise three games – Qualifier 1, Eliminator and Qualifier 2. In the first qualifier, the top two teams at the end of the league phase compete, and the winner gets an entry into the final. The loser of this contest then has to compete in the second qualifier in order to advance to the final. In the Eliminator, the third and fourth-placed teams square off, and the winner advances to the second qualifier to compete with the loser of the first qualifier.
For an IPL squad comprising 25 players, at most eight can be overseas. In an IPL playing XI, at most four can be overseas players.
The Impact Player rule gives a team the flexibility to add a substitute player at any given point during a match. Each team has to name up to five substitutes before the start of a game, from which they can nominate one to their eleven. The substituted player will play no further role in the game. If a team has four overseas players in their XI, they can only name an Indian as an Impact sub. This rule limits the participation of overseas players to four per team in a match.
According to IPL rules, each team gets two points for a win and no points for a defeat. However, if a match is abandoned for any reason, each team gets one point.
Generally, IPL matches are held in India. However, in the past, an entire season or part of a season has been held outside India due to reasons ranging from general elections to the COVID-19 pandemic.
