Modi Govt Delivers: Women-Centric Schemes Led To Increase In Female Voter Turnout In Last 5 Years
A survey showed that schemes linked to income transfer, literacy, employment like Mudra Yojana, house ownership like PMAY, and sanitation were significant contributors to a massive jump in women voter turnout

Implementation of women-centric schemes by the Narendra Modi-led government led to an increase in female voter turnout to 1.8 crore in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as compared to 2019.
A research survey by State Bank of India (SBI) showed that schemes and initiatives related to income transfer, literacy, employment like Mudra Yojana, house ownership like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and sanitation were significant contributors to a massive jump in the voter turnout among women. Other schemes for electricity and improved drinking water also emerging as contributing factors, the report said.

According to the report, out of 1.8 crore women voters, the increase of 45 lakh can be attributed to a rise in literacy, 36 lakh to employment or Mudra Yojana, 20 lakh to house ownership under PMAY, and 21 lakh to sanitation.
How central government schemes did well in the last five years can be gauged from the report, which states: “Average women voter turnout in 19 beneficiary states increased by 7.8 lakh (cumulatively: 1.5 crore) in 2024 as compared to increase of only 2.5 lakh (cumulatively: 0.3 crore) in states where no such schemes were launched after 2019."
Based on recent data released by the EC and juxtaposed with data from the schemes, a clear link can be statistically established to the increase in voter turnout of women. For example, the poll results show that at least 77 lakh more women voted just because of sanitation, employment and housing made available to them between 2024 and 2019.
Voter turnout in India is in line with advanced economies and India could soon be within the top three countries in terms of voting percentages. In the 2024 general elections, 47.5 per cent women voted in India.
