Shirin Sewani On Her Career Choices: 'I Want Roles That Offer Depth And A Strong Character Arc'
Shirin Sewani reveals that one thing that bothers her, though, is the tendency of the industry to box actors into one kind of role.

Shirin Sewani has worn many hats in the entertainment world actress, content creator and a familiar face in TV and web series. From her early days in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai to her work in Naagin 2 and Taj Mahal 1989, she has explored diverse roles. But if there’s one thing she truly craves, it’s roles with substance. She doesn’t just want to be part of a story, she wants to dive deep into characters that inspire. “As an actor, the kind of roles I aspire to take on are those that offer depth and a strong character arc. I admire performances like Alia Bhatt in Raazi and Fatima Sana Shaikh in Dangal – both roles required a deep level of emotional and physical transformation," Sewani shared.
“Recently, my favourite has been Mrs because it provided a wide acting range, something that truly satisfies an actor’s creative hunger. I want to be part of stories that challenge me and allow me to explore different facets of human emotions," she said in a recent interview.

One thing that bothers her, though, is the tendency of the industry to box actors into one kind of role. If a character resonates with the audience, suddenly, similar roles come flooding in. But for an artist, that can feel limiting.
“One of the things I strongly dislike is being typecast. Unfortunately, once an actor excels in a particular genre, filmmakers hesitate to offer them anything different. But the truth is, an actor’s potential is limitless—you never truly know what they are capable of unless given the opportunity to experiment. It is disheartening when makers choose to play it safe rather than explore an actor’s full potential," she told ETimes.
When it comes to genres, she believes comedy is one area that needs more attention. The golden era of Indian cinema had some of the finest comedy films, movies that made people laugh while also telling meaningful stories. She misses that era.
“There was a golden era in Indian cinema when we had some of the best comedy films—films that made us laugh effortlessly while also telling meaningful stories. Sadly, that phase seems to have faded, and in today’s fast-paced world, we rarely see the kind of lighthearted yet intelligent comedies that we once did," she said.
She is passionate about keeping that spirit alive, even in her own way.
“I truly believe that a good comedy film is much needed, especially in today’s stressful and chaotic times. That is why I personally enjoy creating humorous content on Instagram, as it allows me to bring joy to my audience. Making people laugh is a beautiful responsibility, and I take great pride in doing that. Cinema evolves in phases, and every era brings in a different trend. Currently, we are witnessing a rise in thrillers and mystery dramas, which excites me because I love those genres. I would love to be a part of a murder mystery or an intense thriller—something that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats," she added.
