109-Year-Old Woman, 80-Year-Old Daughter Die After Wasp Attack In Their Kottayam Backyard

In a shocking incident that occurred in Kerala’s Kottayam, two elderly women who were admitted to hospital after being stung by a swarm of wasps died on November 6. Kunjupennu, 109, and her daughter Thankamma, 80, residents of Punchavayal, Pakkanam in Erumeli Gram Panchayat, died at a hospital in Mundakkayam.
On Tuesday evening, Kunjupennu was attacked by wasps while walking through a pepper garden near her residence. She noticed a straw that had fallen on the pepper vine and tried to move it. The wasps’ nest in the straw was disturbed, causing the swarm to attack Kunjupennu.

Thankamma, who rushed to her mother’s aid after hearing her screams, was also stung by the wasps. Their neighbours, Joy and Vishnuvardhan, were also stung and both are receiving treatment in hospital.
Thankamma was confirmed dead around 12:30pm while in the intensive care unit. Kunjupennu passed away later.
In 2023, an organisation honoured Kunjupennu as the oldest woman in Erumeli Gram Panchayat. Ward member Shinimol stated that she was a well-known farmer in the village. She was active even at this age and continued to farm, despite minor hearing problems.
