The shocking incident in Badlapur, where two young students were allegedly sexually assaulted within their school premises, has sparked widespread outrage across Maharashtra. In response, the state’s Education Department has announced a significant step toward ensuring the safety of children in schools by mandating the installation of panic buttons in all educational institutions. This decision comes in the wake of mounting public pressure and demands for stricter safety measures in schools.

Maharashtra Education Minister, Deepak Kesarkar, made the announcement during a press briefing on Tuesday. He revealed that the government has established a special investigation team (SIT) to expedite the inquiry into the Badlapur incident. The SIT is expected to provide a detailed report, which will be discussed in a high-level meeting on Wednesday.

“A joint committee has been formed to look into the matter comprehensively. This committee includes the Chairpersons of the Women’s Commission and the Child Rights Commission, along with senior officials from the police department. Their findings will be crucial in formulating our next steps," Kesarkar stated. He also indicated that those who attempted to cover up the incident would face severe consequences, hinting at the possibility of criminal charges being filed against them.

The tragic events in Badlapur have shed light on the need for better safety protocols in schools, particularly those under the jurisdiction of the Tribal Development Department, which, according to Kesarkar, has limited direct control over school administrations. “It is vital that school administration falls under one department to ensure accountability. At present, our schools are managed by both the Zilla Parishad and the Education Department, which complicates decision-making and enforcement," he explained.

The decision to install panic buttons in schools is part of a broader strategy to enhance security. Kesarkar highlighted the importance of this measure, saying, “When I was a Minister of State, I had proposed the idea of installing panic buttons in schools and providing them to women. The panic button is a simple yet effective tool. When pressed, it immediately alerts the nearest police station and activates a tracking system, allowing authorities to quickly locate the individual in distress. The system, which can operate offline, was developed by a company based in Hyderabad."

This move, Kesarkar believes, will significantly reduce the likelihood of such incidents occurring in the future. The panic buttons, which will be installed in strategic locations throughout schools, are designed to be easily accessible to students and staff in case of an emergency.

The Badlapur incident has left the community in shock, with parents and educators alike demanding swift justice and immediate reforms. The accused, a 24-year-old school janitor named Akshay Shinde, has been arrested and is currently in judicial custody. Shinde, who was employed on a contractual basis at the school, was responsible for cleaning duties and assisting young students to and from the washrooms. He was reportedly known as “Kathiwala Dada" among the children.

The Education Department’s decision to install panic buttons is a direct response to the widespread outcry following this incident. It marks a significant shift towards prioritising the safety of children in schools across Maharashtra. However, many are calling for further reforms, including more rigorous background checks for school staff and stricter penalties for those found guilty of such heinous crimes.

As the investigation into the Badlapur case continues, the government’s swift action in implementing panic buttons is being seen as a crucial step in restoring public trust and ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for all children.
