Former Kerala Minister MA Baby Appointed CPI(M) General Secretary
Mariam Alexander Baby, popularly referred to as MA Baby, served as a Rajya Sabha representative of the CPI(M) from the year 1986 until 1998.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has appointed former Kerala education minister MA Baby the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at the party’s 24th All India Conference in Madurai. The party in a post on X, also mentioned that the newly elected Central Committee has 20 per cent women members.
“The CPIM24th Party Congress has elected an 85-member Central Committee with one vacancy. The new Central Committee elected an 18-member Polit Bureau with Comrade M.A. Baby as the General Secretary. 20% of the Central Committee members are women," read the post on X.

Notably, position of party’s general secretary was vacant since last year after the death of Sitaram Yechury, who passed away on September 12 at AIIMS Hospital after suffering from a respiratory tract infection.
MA Baby, now 70, has been part of the CPI(M) for many years. He started his political career with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and later joined the party’s youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). He has served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 1986 to 1998.
