The incident occurred on March 23 when the IGI Airport Police Station received a PCR call about the four fake sadhus. The complainant, Gagan Jain, a chartered accountant from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was reportedly attending a conference in Aerocity when he was approached by the accused near the JW Marriott Hotel.
According to the PTI report, at around 11:30 am, after checking out, he was heading towards the Andaaz Hotel when he encountered four men dressed as sadhus with ash on their bodies and bells on their feet near Gate No. 5 of the JW Marriott Hotel. The men introduced themselves as high priests and Vedic experts, offering to apply a tilak on his forehead.
Initially, Jain refused, but the men persuaded him by invoking Ganga Maaiya. After applying sandalwood, one of the men asked for Rs 2, to which Jain gave Rs 50. The impostors then fixed their gaze on Jain’s gold ring, claiming it had a flaw and was hindering his good luck.
Frightened, Jain handed over his ring, and they instructed him to leave without looking back, warning that he would suffer a loss otherwise. Realising he had been deceived, Jain called the PCR and reported the incident.
The police registered an FIR and began their investigation. According to DCP Usha Rangnani, the suspects were identified using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, leading to their arrest in the Mahipalpur area.
According to the PTI report, during interrogation, the accused confessed to their crime, admitting they had devised the plan after observing devotees in Haridwar willingly offering money and valuables to saints for blessings. They dressed as sadhus and targeted unsuspecting individuals.
