The incident took place in Balehonnur, Chikkamagaluru, where the accused allegedly shot his daughter, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law after a quarrel over his estranged wife

A murder-suicide took place in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru, where a man allegedly gunned down his mother-in-law, daughter, and sister-in-law, injured his co-brother, and then took his own life.
The incident occurred in Chikkamagaluru’s Balehonnur on Tuesday night, when 40-year-old Ratnakar Gowda reportedly got into an argument with his mother-in-law at her residence over a dispute involving his estranged wife. Following the altercation, he allegedly shot the three.

The deceased have been identified as Ratnakar’s mother-in-law, Jyothi (50), his sister-in-law, Sindhu (24), and his six-year-old daughter, Moulya. The injured, Avinash (38), is receiving treatment at a local hospital and is reported to be out of danger.
According to police, Ratnakar and his wife, Swathi, were married for eight years and had a daughter. However, the couple had been separated for over two years due to ongoing differences, which reportedly caused Ratnakar significant emotional distress. Swathi had relocated to Mangaluru for work, while Ratnakar worked as a bus driver at a local school.
Police said Swathi was not present at the time of the horrific murders, as she had not yet arrived from Mangaluru for the post-Ugadi festivities. Ratnakar allegedly carried out the killings following a quarrel with his mother-in-law, then used the same SBBL firearm to take his own life.
Shockingly, Ratnakar had even posted a video on WhatsApp before committing the act, attempting to justify it. In the video, he said:
“My dear friends, family members, my sister, brother-in-law, I want to say that I have made my decision. My wife cheated on me and left me two years ago. She even abandoned her daughter, whom I have been taking care of. My life, my happiness, her love — everything is gone. My daughter’s classmates keep asking her where her mother is. She once took a photo from an album without my knowledge and showed her mother’s photo to her classmates. She feels very bad when asked repeatedly about her mother’s whereabouts."
The Balehonnur police have registered a case of murder, as well as another under the Firearms Act, and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic murder-suicide.
