Shiv Sena leader Rahul Kanal, who was arrested for allegedly leading the attack on Mumbai’s Habitat Studio with party supporters, on Thursday claimed that stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is receiving “terrorist funding" to undermine the country’s integrity and destabilise law and order.

Kamra sparked a political controversy in Maharashtra when he made a “gaddar" (traitor) remark about Shiv Sena president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during his comedy special ‘Naya Bharat’. The comment caused a major uproar, with both the Shiv Sena and BJP demanding an apology from Kamra.

Taking to social media platform X, Kanal accused Kamra of receiving funds from foreign sources, including Canada and Khalistani supporters.

“Being the 5th largest economy in the world economy in the world is not digested by one and all.. so get such puppets like Kunal Komra and fund him with terrorist funding, support him and run it smoothly damaging the integrity and law n order of our country and the state," he claimed in the post.

To support his allegations, the Shiv Sena leader stated that he would present evidence at the Khar Police Station. “Shall share more than 300 screen shots of payments received after multiple videos against our respected PM sir and others," he added.

Additionally, he said he would visit YouTube’s office to submit a request for Kamra’s channel to be shut down and demonetised. “Scrutiny of such accounts is very important and u can see Canadian accounts and Khalistan money coming in," he stated.

Meanwhile, in the latest development surrounding the controversy, Kamra has been issued a second summons in connection with the “traitor" joke about Shinde and has been asked to appear before the police for questioning on March 31. Sources have also revealed that Kamra is in communication with the police through his lawyer.

What Did Kunal Kamra Say In His Stand-Up Act?

In his comedy special, Kunal Kamra referred to Shinde as a “traitor" and used a modified version of a Hindi song from the Bollywood film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai‘ to mock Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray.

Meri nazar se tum dekho to gaddar nazar wo aaye. Haaye!" Kamra sang in his own rendition. However, Kamra did not directly name Shinde throughout his act, though it was clear that he was referring to him.

Meanwhile, the uproar began when the episode of the comedy special was released on Kamra’s YouTube channel. Shortly after its release, Shiv Sena workers, led by Rahul Kanal, went to the studio where Kamra had performed and vandalised the premises. This incident occurred on Sunday night.
