For diabetic patients, taking regular medication during Sehri before fasting can cause a severe drop in blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycaemia, which can be dangerous.

Speaking to Local18, Dr Siraj Siddiqui, Ayurvedic doctor from Dehradun, shared that fasting without food intake, combined with diabetes medication, can cause blood sugar levels to fall dangerously low. This condition, known as hypoglycaemia, can trigger severe complications such as seizures, a locked jaw, or tongue stiffness. Therefore, diabetics must consult their doctor to adjust their medication dosage accordingly.

Dr Siddiqui explained that hypoglycaemia occurs when blood sugar levels drop below 70. The kidneys and brain require glucose for energy, which is only available when sugar levels remain stable. If levels drop too low, the brain may become numb, leading to severe consequences.

He further stated that if blood sugar levels fall to 30-40, it can severely impact the heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and blood pressure is essential.

Fasting is generally not recommended for individuals with high blood pressure, as dehydration can negatively affect the brain and heart. Elevated blood pressure poses a risk to the nerves of the heart and brain, while low blood pressure can also be dangerous.
