Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal was one of the most successful yet controversial films of 2023. Released in December of the same year, the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial made headlines for several reasons. While some appreciated the film, others slammed it for allegedly being toxic and misogynistic. Over a year after its release, Allu Arjun has also praised the movie now.

In a recent interview, Allu Arjun heaped praises on Ranbir Kapoor for his performance in Animal and called it “phenomenal". The Pushpa star went on to say that he really “loved" the film.

“There’s no film that I would say I’d like to have done. But there are films that I really liked. Performances… I loved Animal. Phenomenal performance. That’s one movie I really liked. There are some nice Telugu films that have come out," Allu Arjun told the Hollywood Reporter India.

Interestingly, Animal also starred Allu Arjun’s Pushpa co-star Rashmika Mandanna. The film revolves around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. It shows Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gunning down 200 people with a machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggles to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor).

In April 2024, Rashmika also gave a befitting reply to those calling Animal ‘misogynistic’ and said, “He’s messed in the head and will go to any lengths for his father, that was engraved in my mind when I shot for the film. Nobody can do anything about it, it’s his story. If you want films to be raw, real and correct, Animal is that. After watching it, to say it’s misogynistic or whatever…if you enjoyed it, just leave it."

Meanwhile, the sequel of the film, Animal Park, is also in the making. The team is currently working on its script and Ranbir Kapoor is likely to begin its shoot in 2027.
