Released on October 31, ‘Amaran,’ directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, is smashing records at the box office. The highly anticipated biographical war drama, which tells the inspiring story of the late Indian Army officer Major Mukund Varadarajan, has quickly become one of Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbusters of 2024.
In just 10 days, ‘Amaran’ crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu, with global earnings reaching an impressive Rs 200 crore. The film’s momentum began with a stellar first week, raking in Rs 89 crore, followed by a strong showing of Rs 5.50 crore on its second Friday, bringing the nine-day total to Rs 94.50 crore. The demand for tickets has been overwhelming, with pre-sales on the second Saturday almost doubling the full-day collections of ‘Vettaiyan,’ highlighting the film’s strong reception. ‘Amaran’ is on track to double the lifetime earnings of Sivakarthikeyan’s previous hit, ‘Don’ (2022), further solidifying its status as a blockbuster.
While ‘Amaran’ is expected to secure the title of the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 worldwide, the reigning box office champion, ‘The Greatest of All Time,’ still holds the top spot.
Headlined by Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund and Sai Pallavi as his on-screen wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, ‘Amaran’ also stars Rahul Bose and Bhuvan Arora in key roles. The film’s release coincided with several Diwali releases, including ‘Lucky Baskhar,’ ‘Bloody Beggar,’ and ‘KA,’ but ‘Amaran’ has emerged as the clear winner of the holiday season.
Based on the celebrated book series ‘India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes,’ ‘Amaran’ captures the valor and sacrifices of India’s modern military heroes, bringing an inspiring real-life story to the big screen.
News18 Showsha review of the film reads, “Towards the third act of Amaran, Major Mukund (Sivakarthikeyan)’s father asks him, “Why is Kashmir always in trouble?" This is a crucial moment, though it is shot with a matter-of-fact tone — reflecting the overall style of the movie. It is significant because it is the only time we gain insight into Mukund’s opinion about the politics behind the bloodshed and violence in one of the most volatile regions of the country. It’s essential to understand what a soldier thinks about the politics that have placed him in a situation where his own life is at risk. Throughout the film, director Rajkumar Periasamy reveals the patriotic, romantic, and humanistic facets of Major Mukund, but his political views on the issue are never brought to the forefront. That’s why it is surprising when the question is met with a rather blunt, noncommittal answer. Major Mukund tells his father, “People who are supposed to talk don’t. What else shall we do?" This could be a critique of the ruling leaders of both countries or a commentary on the people of the state. The answer, like the movie, is not straightforward. However, what becomes clear is that Major Mukund is a soldier who will do what is right for his country, regardless of his personal opinions. In the end, if it is true that it’s not who one is underneath but what one does that defines him, then it doesn’t matter what Major Mukund thought. Amaran and director Rajkumar Periyasamy focus solely on what Mukund did, which is the ultimate sacrifice for his duty."
